Carol Wittke, the man who took third in last year’s championship, had a really unlucky opening round in TCR Eastern Europe. He scored just a few points in a Cupra León Competición, entered by the Fullinrace Academy team, so now he is focused on getting better results. The upcoming event at Red Bull Ring should suit him and his car much better.
You finished the last season with two wins in Brno, but in this year’s opening race at Hungaroring, the speed of your Cupra wasn’t really there – which was the same case for the Cupras of other competitors.
Hungaroring has never been our track. Unfortunately, I’ve always had problems there. The pace wasn’t bad, but the results weren’t satisfying. Unfortunately, I had a collision during a fight for 5th place, which was a pity because I was much faster than those in 4th and 5th place and, therefore, would have had the chance to fight for 3rd place. But the race was over due to the accident.
How do you rate your weekend at Hungaroring?
As I said, we were fast enough to fight for 3rd place. But unfortunately, everything turned out differently because of the accident in the first race. As a result, I had to start from the back of the grid in the second race and it took me too long to move up to the front. So the weekend was very bad in terms of scoring points for the championship.
How mentally difficult is it being in a situation where you have a good pace, but the results are not coming?
It’s never easy when you see that you’re fast, but you’re unlucky and, because of that, you don’t get any results.
However, the Red Bull Ring is the fastest circuit on the calendar, so Cupras should have an advantage. What sort of results would you be satisfied with over the course of the weekend?
Yes, Red Bull Ring should be good for us, so if we don’t have any accidents or technical problems, we will finish on the podium, I hope.
What do you think about the new tyre supplier, Kumho Tyre? At Hungaroring, you also had the opportunity to try out rain tyres.
Yes, the tyres from Kumho are good and the difference between the setup for them and Hankook tyres is not that big, so, as a team, we were able to adapt to the tyres well.
What about your goals for this season? What place do you want to achieve in the overall standings?
I would like to achieve third place at least, like last year. Further up would of course be better, but it will be difficult because I scored so few points in Hungary due to the accident. From now on, no more mistakes should be made for the rest of the season in order to collect as many points as possible.
