German driver Sebastian Steibel is an experienced TCR driver, and this year will be his second season in TCR Eastern Europe. From behind the wheel of an older Cupra, he welcomes the addition of the new Trophy class to the championship. Although podiums and fighting for overall wins are also on the agenda.
You debuted in TCR Eastern Europe last year. How do you rate your season?
I am very happy with the first season in TCR Eastern Europe. From the beginning of the season, I was able to fight for good positions and also for some podiums.
Although it was your first season in this championship, you previously spent three years in TCR Germany. How do you compare those two championships?
Both championships are very professional series. In TCR Eastern Europe, you have more teams that are in motorsport like me, as a family.
What did you learn during 2021 and how can it help you in the upcoming season?
Well, in 2021, I got to know some new tracks which I really like to drive and that will help me a lot in the new season. What also helps me is knowing the behaviour and the driving performance of the participating drivers.
You are with your family team Steibel Motorsport. What are your expectations for this season?
I want to achieve or surpass my successes of 2021, and I’m looking, together with my family, to win Trophy class for older cars in the championship. I want to do my best in the overall standings, hopefully gaining some podiums or my first victory – without a jump start penalty (laughing).
How old is your Cupra and do you think it can still compete with newer cars in the field?
My Cupra is one of the first that was built by SEAT Sport and I know it is hard for it to compete with the newer cars. So I am very happy about the Trophy rating, and I am still optimistic that I can snag some podiums – if there is a gap for me to overtake!
The grid for the 2022 season is looking very strong once again with the reigning champion back in the field. Who do you see as your main rivals this year, and what are your goals for the upcoming season?
Well, I hope there will be a big field and that all of us drivers will be able to fight together in good and fair races. So I am looking forward to fighting with every one of them. I am also looking forward to seeing who will start in the Trophy class.
Looking ahead to the new season, are you happy with the return of the Red Bull Ring? How do you like the track?
The Red Bull Ring is one of my favourite tracks. I won my first pole position there in a TCR car, and I will repeat that this season!
