Compared to last year, this season is a lot of harder for Sebastian Steibel. But he gives his all at every race weekend and hopes for better results with his old Cupra TCR.

Steibel was third in the championship last year after three rounds of TCR Eastern Europe. This season, he holds seventh place after three rounds and he just doesn’t seem to have enough speed to fight for top positions.

“It’s hard to fight at the front with my old car,” said Steibel, who is racing with same Cupra TCR as last year for his family team Steibel Motorsport. “I have to take it to the max every race weekend. If you make just a little mistake, you lose places,” continued Steibel.

We spoke to him just before the second race at Poznań, where he was supposed to start from pole position. “The first thing I want to do is start better than yesterday and then I will see which place I can hold until the finish,” said Steibel. Unfortunately, he had a bad start and fell into last position. He passed a couple of opponents during the race and finished sixth.

“There aren’t many places to overtake or that can fit two cars side by side, so some accidents can happen. Poznań is also a dangerous circuit because the barriers are close to the track and there aren’t many gravel traps or anything. But the track is nice and I like it. I raced here for the first time last year and it became my favourite from the beginning. It’s like Nordschleife – a very dangerous track, but everybody likes it.”

Steibel finished both races at Poznań in sixth and holds seventh place in the championship with 36 points. In the Trophy classification for old cars, the situation is better. There, he is fourth with 62 points, in a close battle for third with Václav Janík and Tomasz Rzepecki.

The season is half-way through and there are three rounds left at Grobnik, Slovakia Ring, and Most. “I like Slovakia Ring, but with new cars in the field and their great top speeds, we will see how our car is going to work. I’m also looking forward to Most, which is a nice track,” added Steibel.
